Depending which company you booked with, different policies are in place. For further information please contact the appropriate company as detailed below.

  • There is a dedicated webpage featuring important information on how to amend or cancel your booking with APH

  • Suspended their normal cancellation charges of £9.50 for parking and £15 for hotels until further notice.
  • With the continuing travel interruptions, car park and hotel suppliers are moving their position on volcano specific amendment and cancellation terms. This in general, is a move towards using the value of the customers initial booking towards a future booking within the next 12 months, rather than providing a refund.
  • Any other refunds agreed due will be paid to BCP customers within 28 days.
  • Standard terms and conditions apply to any new bookings made as of 20/04/10.
  • With travel conditions having returned to normal, BCP have reverted to their standard terms and conditions for all past, present and future bookings.

A volcanic eruption in Iceland on Wednesday has created a large plume of volcanic ash which is now drifting southwards towards northern Europe.

Due to the adverse weather conditions caused by this phenomenon,  the Air Traffic Control Service (NATS) has made the decision to cancel a number of flights and close all London and Scottish airports.

Newcastle Airport is introducing a new parking policy that has cab drivers up in arms and could upset passengers, as well.

Starting on the 26th of April, no one will be allowed to drop off or pick up passengers outside the Newcastle Airport terminal building for free.  Instead there will be a “pick-up and drop off” car park about three minutes’ walk from the terminal that will cost £1.00 for up to 20 minutes.

What a bargain, right?  Tell that to the cab drivers who currently get to park outside the terminal for up to five minutes at no cost.  One cabbie told BBC News that it’s going to cost him around £20 a week now to drop off passengers, a cost that he’s unable by law to add onto his regular tariff.

New parking fees causing a stir

So let’s see…Newcastle International has so far managed to disgruntle the cab drivers and make it less convenient for passengers to use the airport.  While they’re on a roll, why not charge people admission to enter the terminal building?

But there may be a method to the madness.  A Newcastle Airport spokesperson said:

“We’re one of the very few airports of our size that has been able to not only retain a free period but increase it.

“We’ve listened to customers and offsite taxi drivers and they’ve been telling us that the five minute period that is currently available in front of the terminal building isn’t long enough.  So we’ve put in place a plan that will allow us to extend the period to 15 minutes.

“If we were to extend the existing provision immediately in front of the terminal building to 15 minutes, we wouldn’t be able to accommodate it because of the very limited space.”

It’s not clear at present how or when they will eventually expand the time allowed to 15 minutes, but in the meantime there’s bound to be a lot more (justified) grumbling amongst passengers and cab drivers who have to use the airport.

It was announced this week that Thomas Cook, the second-largest leisure travel group in the UK, has acquired 100% of Think W3 Limited, owners of Essential Travel.

The move to acquire Essential Travel is in line with Thomas Cook’s strategy to become a leading travel-related services provider by expanding their online presence in this sector.

The purchase price was not revealed, but Essential Travel is one of the leading suppliers of travel-related products in the UK, with gross assets of £2.5 million reported for the financial year that ended 31 March 2009.

Manny Fontenla-Novoa said, “We continue to believe a strong position in the direct travel insurance market is strategically important.  Furthermore, we expect that together with the experienced directors of Essential Travel, we can build upon our respective strengths to enhance Thomas Cook’s position in both travel insurance and other travel services such as airport parking and airport hotels.”

The acquisition is subject to FSA approval, which is expected to complete shortly.

Manchester Airport, along with BBC Radio Manchester, are looking for photos of the “people and places of Greater Manchester” to feature on permanent display in Terminal 1, and they want the public to decide which images are best.

The chosen images will be enlarged to a floor-to-ceiling size and form part of the new Arrivals Experience in Terminal 1.
